Correlation ≠ Causation

The Eugene Weekly blog is being regularly updated with news of the LGTQA vandalism that occurred over the weekend. I’m reticent to attribute blame or suspicion on anyone at this point. Unfortunately, others aren’t so measured in their finger-pointing. From the EW blog:

Esparza and ASUO Legislative Affairs Rep Robert Greene say that they think there is a strong correlation between the Pacifica Forum and this incident. They think they were targeted because, as Esparza says, they have been “very vocal opponents to the Pacifica Forum”. They have this impression because “there have been many student-heavy protests, which as escalated the action” happening around the Pacifica Forum. Esparza thinks that “either a Pacifica Forum member, or another individual or individuals who feel strongly about the Pacifica Forum’s message.”

I hope whoever is responsible for this vandalism will be caught, punished and banned from campus. But I’d just like to say that, as anyone in a low-level philosophy or science class is taught, correlation does not equal causation. In Latin, cum hoc ergo propter hoc.

Does that still hold true if this all started when Cims and Co. began their rabble rousing?

“I know it’s impossible to 100-percent tie this in to the Pacifica Forum,” Esparza said in an at-times tense meeting between students and administrators Monday afternoon. “But it’s clear that the environment here is making people feel like they can do this.”

Also worth noting, “Brown said there was “no sign of forced entry.”

I suppose you could wait until a janitor opened the door and then try and rig it to stay open, but if there is no sign of forced entry, how did they get in?

How many events are coming up now…because of this and PF? Five? Six? Seems like, all-of-a-sudden, we have swastikas and then a massive anti-__________ march, love in, etc.
